The ceremony of conferring PhD diplomas

The 6-year English Program at the Pomeranian Medical University was established in 1996. Most of the teaching staff has had training in Great Britain, USA and Canada. In 2002 first 15 students of the English Program graduated, and 85% of them passed Medical State Exam in Norway at the first attempt. Next years further 35 students graduated, and all of them passed the exam. However, from 2005 the Medical State Exam in Norway is abolished for Polish medical universities’ graduates due to incorporation of Poland to the European Union.

The students at the University are instructed in small groups, both in pre-clinical and clinical courses. All doctors graduated from the English Program at the Pomeranian Medical University found job places in their countries of origin and have a good reputation. At present 229 students from Norway, Sweden, Germany, Canada and the USA are studying at the University.

In the coming academic year (2006/2007) Faculty of Dentistry is opening and in future a 4-year English Program designed for students who plan nostrification (academic recognition) of M.D. diploma at the territory of the United States and Canada will be initiated.

Students with special interest in a specific field of medicine have an opportunity to expand their knowledge as members of more than 20 Student Scientific Groups. That makes them more familiar with methodologies of scientific research, which could finally lead to a Ph.D. program in their countries of origin. A good example of such a career is Paul Sangar, our graduate from the class 2002 who presented a paper “Selective Screening for Inborn Errors of Metabolism in Romanian Children” during the XXXIII International Meeting of Student's Scientific Society. He successfully applied for a position of PhD. student at the Pediatric Research Institute, National Hospital (Rikshospitalet), Oslo, Norway.

The English Program is governed by the Vice-Dean of the English Program who together with members of Dean's Council prepares the curriculum and syllabus, and supervises the educational process. The English Program is a financially independent unit of the University and its funds come from students' registration and tuition fees. Financial means obtained, after subtracting the costs of education and the Program administration, are used for continuous improvement of the standard of teaching. The graduates of the Program receive a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) diploma certifying graduation in medicine from the Medical Faculty or a Doctor of Dental Surgery (D.D.S.) diploma certifying graduation from the Dental Faculty at the Pomeranian Medical University.
