About Poland
Poland is located in the Central Europe, at the intersection of geographic, political and economic influences from the west, east, north and south. Poland is an ancient nation that was conceived around the middle of the 10th century. Its golden age occurred in the 16th century. During the following century, the strengthening of the gentry and internal disorders weakened the nation, until an agreement in 1772 between Russia, Prussia, and Austria partitioned Poland. In 1791, a modern and democratic constitution, one of the first in the world, was established. Poland regained its independence in 1918 but again was overrun by Germany and the Soviet Union in World War II. In 1945, Poland became an independent country, tolerant and progressive. Labor turmoil in 1980 led to the formation of the independent trade union "Solidarity" that over time became a political force and by 1990 had swept parliamentary elections and the presidency.A "shock therapy" program during the early 1990s enabled the country to transform its economy into one of the most robust in Central Europe, boosting hopes for acceptance to the EU in 2004. Poland joined the NATO alliance in 1999.
Poland is a country with diversified landscapes, from mountains along southern border, through plains in the central part and beautiful sandy beaches of the Baltic Sea to the north. There is the wonderful network of great Mazurian Lakes for water sports fans and the green wilds of the Bieszczady Mountains for those who like hiking trips. With huge snowfalls, the Polish mountains offer good conditions for winter sports enthusiasts.
